How Do I Learn How To Sing? Is It Possible?

If I have heard this question once, I've heard it a 100 times. "How do I learn how to sing? Is it possible?" The answer I always give is YES. YES, you can. I have 3 main reasons for having this answer. and I have some very rare exceptions to my answer as well. First I will tell you why I think its possible and then I'll answer your "How do i learn how to sing?" question.

So the 3 reasons why I believe its possible:

Reason 1: Cases where I have personally seen people learn how to sing.
I have seen with my very own eyes, friends, family and acquaintances whom at one point in their lives could not carry a tune to save their lives. Some worse than others. With time, practice, some good direction and enough determination, I've seen these very same people, singing to dumbstruck audiences.

One of them is a close friend of mine named Praveen Namasivayam. In the beginning he couldn't even sing "Happy Birthday", but now he's in my band (I'm the lead singer). He plays rhythm guitar AND sings backup. AND HERE'S THE KICKER. He can now harmonize better than I can.

REASON 2: People are able to improve their singing ability.
A lot of people are naturals. They can hold a tune and sing at a campfire. But they wouldn't be good enough to sell a record. These people with enough training, direction and dedication eventually improve far beyond what they initially thought was possible. So how does this information help you? Well, If you're asking "How do I learn how to sing", then knowing that almost everyone can sing; just that everyone's at a different end of the spectrum will definitely help. So simply put. If you can move from decent to amazing, why can't you move from horrible to decent and then to amazing.

REASON 3: Anatomy.
Everybody has the necessary body parts to sing. It is just that some are a little better off than others. Your vocal chords can be trained and optimized for better singing, just like building muscle or weight loss. So there is no physical characteristic that is stopping you unless (here come the exceptions) you're tone-def or suffer from some sort of vocal paralysis. If you fall in these categories and you're asking "How do I learn how to sing?" then I'm sorry but I don't have the answer.

Now that I answered the "Is it possible?" part of the question, I will move on to answer the "How do I learn how to sing" portion.

You may have noticed that I stated before that people improve with time, practice, good direction, and determination right? Well, these are the components that will answer the "How do i learn how to sing?" question.

Time: You have to understand that there are no magic solutions that will teach you to sing overnight. Any effective process of learning will take time.

Practice: You will have to practice various techniques involving breathing, diaphragm, posture change, vocal warm up exercises and more. Without these you cannot make those changes to your vocal chords, lungs, rib cage, and diaphragm that are necessary to optimize and fine tune that singing voice.

Good direction: Here's the tricky part. Different people will give you different advice. So don't go asking EVERYBODY "How do I learn how to sing?". Following various pieces of advice will take you in various directions. This won't help achieve what you want. You have to stick to a program. Whether it may be one from a trained voice coach, a singing professional or an online program.

Voice coaches and singing professionals charge hourly (pretty fat prices) for results that take time and so are not the most cost-effective way to do things. But if you have no budget constraints then this is the preferred option (beware the phonies).

If you do have budget constraints though, there are several online programs that cost a much more reasonable amount for good quality direction and training. Do be careful when selecting a program though because some of them may not be for you, and some are outright nonsense.

Now for the last component. Determination. Be determined. Go out there and get started as soon as you can. Getting your singing voice is not too far away. Hope you never have to ask "How do I learn how to sing?" again. and maybe you can be the person answering that question for others soon enough.

cheers to your singing success.
